Homeownership is important to maintaining the health and security of the community. As the average price for a single-family home in Greenville is well above $200,000 the purchasing opportunities are practically non-existent for families making less than $50,000 in annual household income.
With 32% of new jobs in Greenville County offering between $15,000 - $25,000 it means a significant number of residents are priced out of the local housing market.The lack of affordable housing units presents a risk to the county’s residential tax base as more people search outside Greenville County for homes to purchase. Recognizing the potential impact to the local economy if this trend is not corrected, Greenville County Council has developed a plan to address the affordable housing shortage and obtained commitment from GHS to invest significant funding for critical affordable housing initiatives.
